Rick’s Picks

Welcome to Rick’s Picks — A Note Before We Dive In

I’ll be honest with you: I spent most of my wine life as a red wine guy. Bold, structured, complex — the kind of wine that demands your attention. Whites were an afterthought, something to sip on a hot afternoon while waiting for the real stuff.
Then I moved abroad, and everything changed.
Somewhere between the seafood markets of coastal Spain and a string of meals I’ll never forget, the whites started getting my attention. Not just any whites — the wines of northern Spain. Galicia in particular. There’s something about the way the Atlantic shapes those vineyards, the granite and schist soils, the relentless ocean minerality, that produces white wines unlike anything I’d encountered before. Wines with structure, tension, and a sense of place so vivid you can almost smell the sea air in the glass.
These days, if I’m being honest, the whites are often the most exciting bottles on my table.
Rick’s Picks grew out of that shift — a desire to share the discoveries, the value finds, and yes, the occasional splurge that makes living and traveling abroad one long, delicious adventure. I’m not a critic with a fancy credential. I’m a guy who loves great wine, knows a good deal when he finds one, and wants you to drink better for less.
Pull up a chair. Let’s open something good.
